His career in Colonial began in January, 1972, as a Social Studies teacher at George Read.During his 19 years there, he taught 8th grade, received the District Teacher of the Year award in 1978, and after earning his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Wilmington University, became Student Advisor and Assistant Principal.He also coached football, girls’ basketball, and track while serving as Student Council coordinator.After 19 years at the school, he moved to WPHS as an Assistant Principal, and was transferred to Gunning Bedford Middle School two years later to become its Principal. He then returned to WPHS to pursue his passion for teaching as a 9th grade Civics and 11th grade US History teacher.During this time, he directed the music for the WPHS theater productions and served as co-chair for the Middle States Evaluation team.After four years in the classroom, he was appointed Deputy Principal at WPHS where he finished out his career in 2001.While in this capacity, Farmer received the Delaware Music Educators ‘Outstanding Administrator Award’ in 1999 and was known to attend every school event to demonstrate his interest and dedication to the students.He served on numerous district committees and continued his service to the district as a consultant after his retirement.
