Max Beheler
Sports Booster, Community Volunteer
Max Beheler, himself once an accomplished athlete, has been a fixture at William Penn High School sporting events for more than four decades. Coaches sayBeheler was more than a spectator because he provided WPHS students with handcrafted plaques and trophies at a price that clearly left little profit in his pocket, but his hobby turned business was Beheler’s way of giving back to a school district.
Four of Beheler’s children graduated from WPHS, along with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His offspring participated in all sports and Beheler, along with his beloved late wife of 59 years, Rose, were among their most dedicated fans.
Beheler defines his career as a 10 mile circle within New Castle. Included in the circle are WPHS and the Delaware Air National Guard where he retired as a Lt. Colonel after 33 years of service. He also coached the Suburban Little League, Suburban Big League, and was a Trustee of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Beheler was also the manager and president of the Delaware Semi-Pro Baseball team, and in 2007 was inducted into the Delaware High School Baseball Hall of Fame.Beheler acknowledges all of his volunteer services and activities would not have been possible without the support of Rose, daughters April (Class of ’72), Kathleen, and son Richard ( Valedictorian Class of ’85), grandsons Paul (Class of ’93), Anthony (Class of ’94). Not to be forgotten is his great granddaughter Jordan who will graduate from WPHS in2017, and his late son, Stephen (Class of ’74).
Beheler and his wife Rose served as WPHS Booster Presidents for basketball, baseball, cross country, and initiated the “Attitude,Ability, Together with Action Makes it Happen Immediately” award (AAAIM-I-HI).
