George Smiley

WPHS Class of 1973

New Castle County Councilman

George Smiley is a native Delawarean who attended several schools in and around the Colonial School District before graduating from William Penn High School in 1973. He has lived in the district for more than 40 consecutive years with a cumulative total of approximately 50 years. George never aspired to be a politician but says he was always driven to succeed and to give back to his beloved community.

George has been a stalwart supporter of the Colonial School District. He helped obtain and develop the property for the Kathleen H. Wilbur Elementary School. He makes certain his fellow council members and constituents are made aware of award-winning educational initiatives in Colonial like Penn Farm and the Culinary Arts Program. George also makes a point to patronize student fundraisers so his vehicle is among those in line for car washes and other student activities, and of course, George continues to be a die-hard Colonial sports fan.

Upon graduation from William Penn, George became a member of Teamsters Local 326 where he served in various capacities such as a Shop Steward, Trustee, Recording Secretary and Vice President, just to name a few. He retired with more than 30 years of service. He is currently the Vice President of the Delaware Association of Counties, Treasurer of the 16th District Democratic Committee, and a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 25. George has also served as President and Vice President of his community civic association. In 2012 he served as President of the Finance Committee for New Castle County Council President, Delaware Association of Counties. In 2006 he was awarded the New Castle County Democratic Party’s Distinguished Service Award.
