Erik Jones

Educator, Mentor, Athlete

As an elementary student Erik was a member of the Colwyck basketball team, which sparked his love for sports. Although football was his passion while in middle school he wrestled, ran track, and played basketball for the George Read Knights.

Erik entered WPHS as a freshman and immediately went out for the WP football team.He began playing his freshman year and played through his senior year. During this time Jones received many accolades such as 1988’s First Team All- Conference, First Team All-State Quarterback, 1989’s Blue Gold All Star, Blue Team Captain and News Journal’s 1988 Offensive Player of the Year.In addition, Jones was part of the 1986 and 1988 Flight A Champions. WPHS’s football team also won the State Championship in 1987.During the off-season Erik was a letterman in basketball and ran track. WPHS’s basketball team went to the playoffs three times during his high school years.

Sports were not the only interests of Erik’s. School pride and culture were very important to him as well. Jones was a member of the Principal’s Cabinet. This cabinet permitted students to have input with regard to school events and culture in the building.

After graduation, Erik attended Delaware State University on a full football scholarship. During his tenure as starting quarterback Erik was awarded ECAC Player of the Week, Honorable Mentioned All MEAC, MEAC Player of the Week, Two MEAC Championships, and was a four-year letterman 1990-1993 as a starting QB.

In 1994, Jones graduated from Delaware State with a degree in Marketing and pursued a career in Corporate America. He later received an MBA from Wilmington University. While working he coached football and mentored students in the Colonial School District at Martin Luther King Elementary School and WPHS. Erik continued to mentor his elementary mentee through graduation from WPHS. His mentee went on to receive a full scholarship for track.
