Dave Taylor

Educator and Coach

David Taylor spent 35 years at William Penn High School (WPHS) in various capacities.He began his career as a social studies teacher but soon moved up through the ranks as an Assistant Principal. Taylor is most noted for sharing his love of sports with students. For ten years he coached the WPHS baseball team; four of those years as the head coach. He is most proud when the team was named State Champions in 1977 and 1978. Taylor also headed the school’s softball team for eight years, with the team being named Second Runner Up in the year 2000. For more than 30 years Taylor also worked with the coaching squad for the Colonial’s football team, serving as an Assistant Varsity Coach and Head Junior Varsity Coach.

When he was not on the field or in the school, Taylor served on the Board of Directors for the New Castle County School Employees Federal Credit Union, which at that time had more than 9,500 members. Taylor also served as a board member for the Delaware Retired School Personnel Association and as a Hearing Officer for the Delaware State Board of Education.

As if being an educator and coach weren’t enough, Taylor proudly served his country for 28 years as a commissioned officer in the United States Army Reserve where he spent two years on active duty before retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He taught military officer education at WPHS for the US Reserve for ten years.

Taylor also spent 15 years practicing civil law on a part-time basis after passing both the Delaware and Pennsylvania State Bar Associations. He worked tirelessly in the areas of residential real estate, wills, estates and assisting another attorney with personal injury and workers’ compensation cases.
