
Clayton “Buddy” Hewes
Educator, Coach, Community Leader
Buddy Hewes grew up in Leedom Estates and attended Wilmington Manor and George Read before graduating from William Penn High School in 1965. While a student at Wm. Penn, Buddy participated in both varsity football and wrestling.
He married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Buchanan (WPHS Class of ’66).Buddy and Sandy have been married for 50 years and are the parents of four children:Clayton, III (Class of ’86), Carey (Class of ’88), Jeffrey (Class of ’92) and Jason (Class of ’99).
After graduation, Buddy served in the Delaware Army National Guard.He later joined the New Castle County Police Department.After leaving the department, Buddy served as a Justice of the Peace in New Castle County.A final career change led Buddy back to WPHS as driver’s education teacher.
Buddy gave back to his community through various community service opportunities.One of these was through coaching.He coached baseball, football and wrestling over the years.As a wrestling coach, Buddy coached teams for St. Peter’s CYO, DeLaWarr High School, McKean High School, Wilmington Friends and then ended his career coaching back at Wm. Penn where his love for the sport began.During his years as a coach, Buddy had the opportunity to coach many WPHS greats when they were youths starting out in sports.Such athletes include:Marvin Dooley (football/wrestling), Drew Moffett (wrestling), Jim Zimmerman (wrestling), John Massey (wrestling) and Eric Jones (football) to name a few.
Besides coaching, Buddy has given back to the community serving as PTA president at Castle Hills Elementary School in the late 1970’s.He also served as President of the Delaware Driver’s Education Association.Buddy served as Potentate of the Nur Shrine and also as a Scout Leader and Merit Badge Counselor for the Boy Scouts of America.Buddy serves as a minister at local hospitals.
